Bauru is home to 5 universities and a large center for clinical correction of cleft palates. Both of these bring many "outsiders" to reside in Bauru for studies and treatment. The city is more fast paced than the average interior Brazilian city, but yet still has some of the "flavor" of interior of Brazil. The high walls and security systems make it harder to get into homes and to get to know neighbors, but we are finding that the population here is generally receptive to the Gospel. However, just as a majority of people in the US, the people here struggle with a "self-sufficiency" way of living rather than seeing a need for God.
We do have a WalMart and McDonalds here in Bauru which are both a blessing. The city is still rapidly growing, although we are finding the population to be more "lower middle" and "middle middle" class than we expected. The city is rapidly changing as it is growing toward the south of the city, and the city is struggling to keep up to service these new communities. Opportunities for ministry continue to abound. We have rented a facility in a local neighborhood and have started our first church plant. This new church is one of very few fundamental churches in the area. See our "ministry" page to learn more about the Comunidade Batista Vida Nova (our church planting ministry here).
